Journal / of Anna and Eliza Hill, 1797 Sept. 1-1803 Nov. 5.

Journal of daily entries kept alternating weeks by sisters Anna and Eliza Hill of Boston. Entries record the weather, social calls between friends and family, attendance at church services (particularly Samuel Kirkland's New South Church), popular literature and theatrical performances. There is some reporting of newsworthy events: A smallpox epidemic (1798), public obsequies following the death of Washington (1799 Dec.), the execution in Dedham of Jason Fairbanks for murder (1801 Sept.), a fire followed by looting in Boston (1801 Dec.). The Hills were a prosperous merchant family; the father, Thomas, owned a distillery and his sons Thomas and Henry went off to sea. The journal provides detailed evidence of the lives of women of the merchant class during this period in Boston.
